Hard To Handle, Doin' That Rag, Good Morning Little School Girl, Morning Dew, Sitting On Top Of The World, Turn On Your Love Light
Jerry plays glide guitar on Hard To Handle. According to Ron Ramsey, who attended the show, the other bands on the bill were SRC (a local group), and the Velvet Underground. The Velvet Underground played a very long set and as a result the Dead only got to play one set on this date. According to Ramsey the Dead did the same thing to the Velvet Underground the next night.

Momentum
Though there is the Yellow Dog joke in here, this show seems like a hidden gem. Not many reviews or views, though this builds some incredible momentum. The Lovelight is a face melter, no question.

the playing is not off. "rag" is pulled off sounding great. "Handle" is sloppy because jerry is experimenting with the slide guitar. Beyond that its april 1969!!

sloppy
i'm with JamminJerome here - these electric theater shows are pretty cool, but the playing is off. however the breakouts on night two, especially the crazy feedback with What's Become of the Baby, definitely make up for it. this show has some nice tunes - Morning Dew is intense, but for the best of April, check out The Ark run from a few days earlier...

Pigpen in Chicago 1969 = FIVE STARS
After performing at the Ark in Boston, April 21, 22, & 23 the boys took a day off to travel to Chicago to perform on April 25 at the Electric Theater.
3 of the 6 songs performed here are sung by Pigpen. I happen to be a huge fan of Pigpen and cheerish every performance I can get my hands on of this incredible performer, musician and composer. Hard to Handle is loose bluesy and funky...like Chicago was in 1969.
I recommend adding this to your 1969 collection, the recording is remarkable.
Eat, Drink Be Merry, and Listen to the GRATEFUL DEAD.
Thanks for the love.

short, sloppy, but still sweet
Starts sloppy with Jerry on the slide guitar, which doesn't really work. Things quickly start to get back in order, but I feel as if the show is a bit sloppy all night. Good Schoolgirl, Sittin', and Lovelight. Sound is good. Solid 4 stars: no more, no less.

very, very nice
Starts off a little slow with a weak Hard to Handle (i dislike slide guitar on this song), and an apocryphal, if sloppy Doin That Rag, which does however feature a sweet jam. This song is usually sloppy, though, and it's one of my very favorites- anyone know what the best ever Rag was? The Schoolgirl smokes, and it gets goin from here (Pig says it doesn't matter if you're only FIFTEEN years of age- a recent encounter?) Nice sound quality, aggressive, daring guitar work. Worth the download.
